Carrizo Ranch is located near the historic community of Calaveras, Texas which was originally established in the 1860's. Calaveras was granted its first post office in 1882. By 1885 the population soared to 20 and mail was delivered by horse from San Antonio. Shortly after the community had access to the railroad in 1886, the community grew to 250 residents. The main businesses were two general stores, brickyards, and a hotel. The community also had a local saloon, meat market, bakery and barber shop. By 1896, the school had 63 students. In the 1900's the population grew to 369. When the post office closed in 1925 and the railroad stopped serving Calaveras, the population began to decrease to approximately 100 and has remained steady since.

The grocery store of Calaveras has been converted to a locally owned restaurant.
The Mackey Brick and Tile Factory located in Calaveras in 1860 created and produced their own money.
